High Quality Thermistor Certification

A High-Reliability Chip Thermistor

Jun 20, 2024

Thermistors can generate significant heat, especially when large currents pass through them. This heat generation can adversely impact both the thermistor and its operational environment.

Traditionally, the welding between the thermistor chip and the conductive sheet involves directly covering the welding part of the conductive sheet onto the resistor chip after applying solder. However, this method often leads to the formation of air gaps or voids due to the large welding area. These gaps can expand with heat, and the repeated thermal cycling can weaken the welding strength and reliability.

Moreover, traditional power NTC thermistors are typically installed using a direct plug-in method, which occupies significant space and height, making automatic installation inconvenient. While this method provides good heat dissipation and prevents damage to the PCB board, the bulky design limits its use in space-constrained applications. In contrast, traditional SMD NTC thermistors, although compact and suitable for automatic mounting, are not ideal for power applications as their resistor bodies can reach temperatures up to 200℃, which can damage high-temperature PCB boards.

To address these challenges, Nanjing Shiheng Electronic Technology Co., Ltd. has developed a thermistor with a new horizontal installation structure. This innovative design maintains the heat dissipation efficiency of traditional direct-insert power NTC thermistors while preventing heat-related damage to both the thermistor and the PCB board. Additionally, this new structure significantly reduces installation height and space requirements, enhancing product reliability and facilitating automatic mounting.

This high-reliability SMD thermistor comprises a resistor chip and a conductive sheet, featuring upper and lower conductive sheets welded to the respective surfaces of the resistor chip. Each welding part includes one or more welding bumps to ensure welding strength, preventing heat generated during operation from affecting the welding integrity. The conductive sheets extend parallel to the resistor chip surface, then bend downwards to form lower folding parts, with the ends of the conductive sheets designed as mounting parts. This bending structure ensures proper spacing between the resistor chip and the PCB board, promoting ventilation and heat dissipation, and supporting automatic mounting.
